A Bit of Perspective: Touring in a live band

In this new segment I like to call “A bit of perspective” is where I like get down to Earth with an analysis or comparion between some experiences in my life to the experiences of others. Through that I get to understand more of the extremes some go through, which we hardly think about on an everyday basis. At the end of the day I usually conclude, and we can all relate, that dispite the outcomes we find that life is so fucking interesting.

Not that I’m implying that I’m in a band or touring, but often times I get those random thoughts of “what would it be like to be touring in a rock band?”

Lately I’ve been working with a company that does the sound and stage for events such as high school proms (since its prom season right now). Usually we would start our days at 11:30am and end the night at 1:30am, Friday and Saturday, weekend after weekend. Several weekends in a row we worked a whole Friday and a whole Saturday. Initially, in my mind I played it short thinking that its only two days of the week, which was not too shabby at all, but once I actually went through with it I realized that it is torture. One time I tried partying the same night after working a friday with another even the following day but flaked out because of exhaustion. We’d want to sleep in till 2pm but usually hotel checkouts are at 11, if we’re lucky 12pm, so we gotta kick ourselves out. But damn, doing that we’d feel like shit the whole day becoming very unproductive while working even screwing up my regular sleeping habits (I wake up at around 3pm now). Also hopping onto recovery mode during the week. Now that prom season is coming to an end, I look back and was like, “shit that was a trip.”

Recently, I more of my time has been occupied from watching documentaries. One of my favorites is Soulwax’s “Part of the Weekend Never Dies,” which is a band who just about does everything during their tours; sound check(morning), play in their band, and dj at the end of the night (4am not including packing!), and it repeats night after night… touring around the world for three friggin’ years, just incredible. *BOOM PERSPECTIVE*

I could say that I’m not used to the physical or psychological stresses involved with working long weekends, but mad props for those who actually go through with it. I’m quite envious to all of those bands and performers who had the opportunity to have an experience like that. It would be a nice story to tell years down the line when kids begin to stay that your music “was soo 2009.” I should learn how to play an instrument and join a punk band or at least be a groupie so I can roll with the cool kids on tour buses. Anyways imma stop speaking jibberish, it was just another one of those random thoughts.
